The General Assembly must regularly examine itself, including its role and working methods, to ensure it is fit-for-purpose and capable of responding effectively, thoughtfully, and meaningfully to the most urgent global challenges. The General Assembly remains the chief deliberative, policy-making and representative organ of the United Nations, as well as the world's premier multilateral forum. As the President of the General Assembly has observed, a stronger United Nations requires a stronger General Assembly.

I call to order the meeting of the Working Group and the strengthening and revitalizing of the work of the General Assembly.
Ambassador Williams and myself welcome you to this meeting. As noted in the letter that we have circulated on the 19th of February we convened today's meeting for the Thematic Debate to review implementation of the pillars regarding the process for the selection appointment of the Secretary General and other Executive Heads and also the Office of the President of the General Assembly. I will briefly describe the provisions contained
in Resolution 793 to 7 regarding the process of the selection appointment of a Secretary General. Then Ambassador Matrice will take over and present the Pillar and the Office of the President of the General assembly and introduce our guest.
As we mentioned in the concept note circulated before this meeting, the aim of the session is to assess how we can support the full implementation of the mandate contained in Resolution 79 327. We would welcome today your reflections on the application of provisions that formulate the mandate for the ongoing already selection and appointment process for the Secretary General. As you know, the Resolution and Member
States reaffirm collectively and unanimously.
