Oh my god. Good? Okay. I'm gonna hit start and time myself. Hello everyone. Can you hear me? I don't, I can't tell. Perfect. I, as you can see, I am going to be speaking today on keeping humanity in AI adoption. I'm specifically looking at nonprofits adopting AI and on the next slide. Well, it says purpose and experience. I wanted this slide to be more a little bit about why I'm here specifically speaking to you. Why? Should you care what I have to say about AI adoption in nonprofits outside of my career background being in technology consulting, data analytics, and AI, I was once a youth like you. I'm sure you hear that on repeat constantly. But to be here today is honestly an honor and a dream come true for me, decades in the making since I was the technical definition of a youth. And while my career has led me to tech consulting to have the knowledge for this presentation, but the heart comes from my experiences in my teen years. In 2007 to 2008 timeframe, I wasn't there for a year, but the end of 2007, I worked on a community farm and did cultural education in Cuba. And from that, I originally, when I went to college, wanted to work for UNICEF or join the Peace Corps. And then in 2010, I went to South Africa and taught fifth graders math. And then my new goal was to teach the children of the world. And then life happened and I went down a different path. But today, I know that the girl that traveled to these places would finally be proud. And that's why I'm so honored to be here today to speak to you specifically on International Youth Day. And so thank you for having me. and social media recently for me, and I have heard rumors that maybe it's a little aged or dated, but there's the remembering your why. And so I just wanted to show you visually speaking a little bit of my why that I had just mentioned on the previous slide. So these first three pictures here from my time in Cuba on the farm and the youth that I interacted with there. And then the rest of the images here are from my time teaching math in South Africa. So just wanted to show you where my heart and passion come from in particular today, remembering my why of why I'm here today. So quick agenda of it is taking a look at current AI adoption and then both globally in general as consumers, organizations, and quick peek at nonprofits. We'll look through a couple of adoption use cases that I have. We'll look at the barriers to adopting AI for nonprofits, the opportunities that nonprofits have for responsible AI adoption, and then finally ending it with a challenge or a takeaway for you from this today. So in the current state, I just thought it was a very interesting statistic to share with you today that generative AI has reached 53% of the population. within the first three years, outpacing both the adoption of the PC and the internet. But first, what does adoption even mean, right? I keep saying AI adoption. What does it mean in this case, right? AI adoption is the strategic process of integrating artificial intelligence tools into daily workflows, business operations, and decision making. And for the purposes of this presentation and the scenarios and statistics we'll be looking at, Adoption means organizations using AI, and at least 1 business function that would be considered adoption of AI. I wanted to will be. I wanted to show a graph and the results of this one, but I'll have to speak to it a bit more. But if any of you have access to phones and wanna scan this QR code, I thought it might be fun to take a look at those in attendance today currently using AI. And just a few handful of buckets of questions to see if you're part of a nonprofit or in organization or attending school, how or if you're using AI currently and read the results. So I will give a couple of minutes here to allow for folks to scan that code and answer those questions. I'm excited. I get to see live results. I wish I could share it with you, but, um, give it another 30 seconds or so. And you can feel free to continue to have the poll. I would love a full representation of it even if I continue on in the presentation. So it doesn't seem to be shifting much, but I will say that more than half hovering right about 51, 52% is the basic personal use where employees occasionally use AI tools, chatbots, productivity apps for individual tasks. And the next highest at about 20% is you're in the early organization, Oh my goodness. Organizational adoption where you've recently started using AI for specific business purposes or pilot projects that you might be implementing. So I think that was right about where I expected it, but I appreciate everyone's participation and very, very interesting results to see certainly that. So this from a study done by Stanford University in their AI index shows the results of consumer AI adoption specifically. They didn't have a nice breakdown like this for organizational, but I thought it'd be interesting just to take a look at the top 30 countries adopting AI. I know it's very hard to see, there's so much data on there. Just interesting to note that the United Arab Emirates is the highest in adoption rate with 64%. The US is 24th with 28%. And the overall organizational adoption rate is roughly about 88% as of the 2026 annual report of the AI Index. You know, among adoption AI, it's helpful to look at the sentiment of folks around AI, right? You get how they're using it, but how do people feel about AI? So globally, the nervousness around AI has risen to about 52%, but optimism continues to outpace nervousness with where people believe that the benefits outweigh the risks is up to 59%. And this graph that I've created here from the data from that same study, just interesting to note, the line at the bottom there is the variance. So it's the difference between the answers, the percentage of folks feeling optimistic versus the percentage of folks feeling nervous around AI, because I think it gives, if it's really far down or really high, obviously shows strong optimism or strong nervousness, with Canada representing the most nervous around AI adoption and China representing the most optimistic with some of the highest nervousness or optimism respectively, as well as the largest variance between those two answers. and both optimism and nervousness growing in their results at the same pace, right? So if it's 50% now, it might be 52%, but they're both growing at the same rate. So that variance line is pretty similar year over year, even though the bar graphs above it are changing year over year, slowly but surely, they're pacing at the same rate. How are nonprofits adopting AI? And I apologize, I did have to use a US-based study. I looked tremendously for global results in it and I couldn't find anything very reliable in it. So this is based on US data, a study of about 400 nonprofits and 200 nonprofit leaders were interviewed in it that are using AI. So about two-thirds of nonprofits in this study are using AI and of of those using AI, 63% use it for internal productivity, 84% use it for communications, you know, tailoring emails, and 61% use it for fundraising. And we'll look at how in our two use cases do fall into one of these three buckets typically. And 35% of nonprofits do state that they're very interested in expanding their use of AI. And I added the note, because I thought it was interesting, that 17% of nonprofit leaders note that their funders are the ones kind of pushing for AI adoption. They're the ones that are kind of pushing for them. We want you to adopt AI. We're seeing AI is being used more. Please go ahead and use it. So they're the people giving the money. So that is also part of the push for nonprofits to adopt AI. So looking at a couple of use cases here, when I first was presented with the topic of AI adoption in nonprofits, I come from a small town in Western New York here. I think 10,000 people live in my town and not much more in the whole county. But luckily for me, one of my friends nearby in the area works for a global nonprofit and has fantastic use cases of AI adoption. is from the Ugandan Water Project. The Ugandan Water Project seeks to provide clean water access for all of Uganda and help free them from waterborne diseases, help ensure that the nation of Uganda adopts the best practices to maintain what they set up. And they do a ton of work in helping everybody in Uganda gain access to clean water. So a phenomenal nonprofit here. But their use cases, when I reached out to my friend Jessica, I thought seemed to overlap with what I would believe a lot of nonprofits may use AI for, first being AI grant writing and donor outreach. They feed AI their prior grants that they have written. and any other data they have around the grants that they've been awarded in the past to help them write out their grant applications effectively, targetedly, right towards the grant that they might be after. Because in a post pandemic funding, what I've heard directly from them is that it's become more complicated and requires new strategies to get limited funding, right? And their organization also restructured, which left a big gap in that knowledge around the grants that nichely fit their needs that AI helped bridge. You know, if they needed to replace that gap, add another person, that takes time and that takes financial resources and AI can help them get that funding now. So it is always be it throughout this presentation, never replacing humans, but helping humans be efficient to do more of your mission based work. And so from that they were awarded the past year, they've awarded nearly half a million dollars of grants with AI assisted applications, and I want to emphasize it's assisted. Humans still review it, make edits before it goes out. They don't blindly send out anything that was written by AI. They also use AI to find grants that they maybe previously didn't know were out there that would be a good fit for them to apply for. They have found 20 new grants by using this method. They also use it for other internal in project management. And I just wanted, I added a quote here from my friend Jessica that I thought did a fantastic job in really summarizing AI adoption in nonprofits, which is that she said, that I think it's important to recognize that for our organization, the Ugandan Water Project, AI has not eliminated any human positions. On a limited nonprofit budget, we've been able to utilize AI to help focus and streamline our work and be more efficient with our time. Ultimately, this increased efficiency allows us to impact more people in Uganda with clean water for every dollar saved on man hours alone. And I just want to emphasize it's dollars saved on man hours alone. In this use case, my company, Whippley, has worked a lot with AI to create products like this one around voice to text. And the goal for this is to help with social work and case management. My husband, hi honey, if he's watching back home, works for a nonprofit as a peer support counselor. So he works one-on-one with folks who just need help. I feel silly saying this, a professional thing, but adulting, for lack of a better phrase, right? They just need that extra help. They might maybe have intellectual developmental disabilities, or they just struggle to do the things that they need to as an adult. And if he were to throw out a number, he guesses around 30% of his time is spent doing administrative work, right? Entering his notes from his peer sessions, right? Entering their information in backing up any of that info into the required software system that is either regulatory required or just the company requires it be leveraged. Now with this AI use of voice to text, it turns a recording that you could do live in the field. We work with a lot of head starts at my company, which are federally funded low income education and daycare for children zero to six that you're out in the field, maybe an incident happens with a child and you're on the playground, you can't walk away from your kids. And if you wait hours later, you might forget very critical details about the incident. It allows you live on your device to speak into it and it will fill out the required software fields and it will also translate it. So if you're comfortable in Spanish or any other language, but the software is in English or the other peers in your organization expect it to be in English, you could speak whatever you're comfortable with into the device and it will translate it for you and integrate into the software. so that you can live input the information you have at hand and free up that time. And if my husband had this for his work, he'd be able to take more peers on. That's to emphasize that it is not to replace staff by any means, but now he can do more human work, more human to human work, as opposed to replacing the humans that are critically needed to do what their mission is. Their mission isn't to, you know, enter information to software, it's to help peers in their community. And AI can help people do that. However, it's not always easy to adopt AI. There are known barriers for nonprofits in particular in adopting it as well as other organizations. Some, you know, the first is cost or tech access. Some AI can just be expensive or the use of it, right? The more times you ask the same question in different ways, the more words you use, it's expensive. It requires internet access and tech that is compatible for AI. People generally have a fear, right? We started this out with people's nervousness around AI adoption. There is a general fear that is decreasing or increasing depending on where you're looking, and it's the fear of being replaced. It's the fear of losing control or the fear of just becoming irrelevant. There's a distrust around AI, right? The level of accuracy it is. I'm sure everybody in this room has an example they've experienced or someone's told them where they had to correct AI. right, where that was not the right translation, that isn't the right answer, that just creates a level of distrust with the AI you're using. AI sometimes can have a difficulty of looking between knowledge versus belief or inherent bias in it, right? It has a difficult time leveraging nuance, right? If in the US in particular, if you fed it arrest records, right, criminal convictions, things that matter, just hard data around it, and then asked AI to predict a demographic of people who would likely commit a crime, it would probably come out pretty biased, right? It wouldn't know the nuances of institutionalized racism over the years or things like that. It wouldn't be able to pick up necessarily that information if you did not feed it that data also. If you siloed it to just certain data points, it may struggle with the nuance of bias. There's also a language barrier in a lot of AI. Many models work best in English. Often a lot of them are written in by English speakers. And so until it learns from other users using other languages, it may struggle with other languages. Now, it's not to say if you're just doing straight translation, this is more around if you needed to interpret the language or things like that. And the gap is pretty wide globally. And then there's some ethical complexity around it. And this is the ever evolving understanding of things like how data centers impact our environment, right? I think we've seen it pretty much across the globe. It's very heavy in the US around people very opposed to data centers or for them due to the fear of the environmental impact. And I think it's safe to say that there's still a lot of information needed about the true environmental impact of data centers. They're fairly new. You can just speed through. I didn't realize it was going to do all of them and then go through. You just keep going through. It's the same slide as with the animations for it. Yep. But there are opportunities for responsible AI adoption, especially with nonprofits, to overcome some of these barriers, right, and adopt it responsibly. And it really boils down to being intentional and responsible with how you adopt AI. So research and select research available AI solutions. Many companies can offer a discount to nonprofits. We at Whipple help a lot of nonprofits sometimes find those discounts that might be available to them and listen to your team and find the best fit for their needs, right? If you're the company my husband works for, reach out to your team and hear their pain point is entering information in a system, right? Versus writing emails is fine. Figure out where AI would fit best for them. Words matter in this case, right? I mentioned cost escalates with the chaotic use of prompts and words. Be deliberate with your words. If you're like me, when I started out, you know, asking copilot, my company uses questions. I'm a very polite person, or at least I like to think I am. And I will ask AI, please and thank you. You don't need to be polite to AI. I promise you won't hurt its feelings and it's just going to spend your money. So you save your money and be as rude as you'd like to copilot. It is not offended. And governance, there are things called RAIs or policies, responsible AI policies, which are governance guidelines that ensure AI is used safe, ethically, transparently, and securely with human accountability, privacy protections, fairness, appropriate oversight. And these are critical new policies that organizations are adopting quickly to ensure that the AI they adopt is responsibly used, both cost-wise as well as ethically. Network and share. Learn from your peers, right? See how others are using AI, the two use cases we have here. Maybe some of those are similar to the needs of your organizations. And share what you have done successfully with others. I see nonprofits quite often as a community, right? Where mutual success is ideal. You're not competing for profits, right? You all are mission-driven organizations that seek for good throughout the world. Just different missions around what that good is. Share your success, right? Enable each other to be successful. And monitor it and keep the human, right? This is again, keeping humanity in AI. Don't just blindly accept AI outputs, right? If you have it help you write a grant, you should still have someone who's familiar enough to review it. Don't just blindly send it off anywhere. I've seen a lot on social media around, like recruiters who blindly send recruitment emails out where it left in part of their prompt or even sometimes the watermark from whatever AI feature it used. Don't be that person that goes viral for doing that and teach it. If it misuses language or it doesn't understand nuance, give it that feedback, right? These are large language models. They need to be taught, right? As nonprofit organizations, see it as the ethically responsible folks that need to keep the morality and the ethics the use of AI. So teach it so it keeps it right. I thought it'd be fun just my my sons might be watching that enjoy Spider-Man quote of you know with great power comes great responsibility. Right and then the challenge that I have for you and this is shift the fear to confidence right. We've talked a lot about there's barriers, how you can overcome them, examples of folks who are using AI in their organizations, right? But don't let fear of uncertainty hold you back from the opportunities that AI provides. As I was reviewing my time traveling the world and immersing myself with the missions that I felt passionate about, I was reminded of the feeling that I'd forgotten about by living in corporate America a bit, right? And reconnecting with that, it made me even more passionate for nonprofits to adopt AI. These are powerful tools that can do a lot. It is not for the for-profit companies to be the ones that get to use it all and have all the advantages of that, they get enough. You know, this is tools that could do so much good if it fell into the right hands. And so it made me think of that. So throughout history, right powerful technology and scientific advancements have often been corrupted by greed or power seeking and what had the potential for good. often has been weaponized to do harm rather than good. You see it a lot in Hollywood movies, right? Terminator, things like that. That's what people like in AI to be, right? But that's if it falls, quote, into the wrong hands. Nonprofits have the opportunity with AI to ensure that it's, sorry to keep, I think this is the third time just this slide I'm using air quotes, but goodness is preserved and not let fear allow AI to grow without the critical voice of humanity it needs, like nonprofits are that humanity voice and youth in particular, I believe have the non-corrupted voice needed to keep the necessary human element within the AI models and policies to ensure that adoption of these tools do more good in the world than the harm that many fear. Tonga [40:12]: Distinguished participants, young leaders and colleagues, Malo E Lele from the Kingdom of Tonga. Artificial intelligence offers extraordinary possibilities for education, employment, entrepreneurship, creativity and public service. Yet its benefits will not be equitable by default. For small island developing states such as Tonga, limited digital infrastructure, high connectivity costs. Small labor markets, and uneven access to technical expertise may deepen existing inequalities unless inclusion is placed at the heart of AI governance. Young people must therefore be recognized not merely as users of emerging technologies, nor simply as persons. Requiring protection, but as informed partners in shaping the digital future. In Tonga, we affirm that youth are not problems to be fixed, but potential to be fulfilled. Our national youth policy and strategic plan of action 2026 to 2030 advances digital connectivity, literacy, cybersecurity, data protection, and youth-led innovation. It also recognizes that technology must remain grounded in human dignity, cultural identity, and the values that sustain our communities. Tonga accordingly encourages the youth-led declaration to advance three priorities. First, equitable access to reliable connectivity, digital education, and AI skills, including for youth in rural communities and outer islands. Second, strong safeguards protecting privacy, personal data, mental well-being, and young people from online exploitation, discrimination, and algorithmic harm. Third, meaningful youth participation in the design, governance, and evaluation of AI systems, not as an afterthought, but from the outset. AI should strengthen human potential, not diminish human agency. Its success must ultimately be measured not only by speed or sophistication, but by whether it empowers every young person. Protects those most vulnerable, and leaves no community behind. And thank you. Dominica [42:22]: Good afternoon, Excellencies, distinguished delegates, colleagues, dear young people, ladies and gentlemen, and a very special good afternoon to my daughter, Sammy. It's a privilege to join this youth and AI summit on behalf of the mission of the Commonwealth of Dominica on International Youth Day. We're gathered at an important moment. Artificial intelligence is advancing rapidly. But the question before us is not simply what AI can do. The more important question is who's gonna shape it, whose knowledge will guide it, and who will benefit from it. As a father, I think often of my daughter and of the world that technology such as AI will help shape for her generation. I want Sammy to inherit a future which young people are not simply users of systems built elsewhere, but informed creators. decision makers and stewards of technology and service of people and planet. For small island developing states, these questions are immediate. Our islands are among the places most exposed to climate disruption, biodiversity loss, and ocean degradation. Yet they're also places of extraordinary innovation, ecological knowledge, and cultural resilience. Young people in SIDS should not be positioned merely as future consumers of technology developed elsewhere. They must be empowered to help design the system, institutions and solutions that serve their communities. That's the opportunity we see in Dominica. As the nature island, Dominica understands that its natural environment is not separate from development. Its forests, its rivers, coastlines, and marine ecosystems are the national assets. They are the sources of culture and community identity. And they are a foundation for a shared national capability, helping to visualize coastal and marine ecosystems, bring together relevant data for decision making, create immersive pathways for sustainable tourism, and engage young people in caring for the places that they call home. But technology alone is not the answer. The value of AI and digital infrastructure depends on the principles behind them. We need systems that protect sovereignty, that respect local and indigenous knowledge, obtain meaningful consent, ensure attribution and benefit sharing, and strengthen rather than replace human judgment. We also need to build practical pathways for young people, pathways into marine science, digital storytelling, coding, data stewardship, immersive media, entrepreneurship, and climate leadership. Imagine a Dominican student using digital tools to document a reef, a map, or a coastal risk, tell the story of a fishing community. This is not a distant vision. With the right partnerships and governance, the right investment, it's a practical opportunity. The future of AI must not be designed only in major technology centers. must also be shaped in island communities by young people who understand both the urgency of the climate crisis and the value of living in balance with nature. Dominica's message is clear. Digital transformation must be inclusive. It must be nature positive and grounded in the knowledge and aspirations of our people. Thank you. It is so good to see you here today and to be with you here today, both in this room and across the globe. Um, we are happy to see you. So, I wanted to say, The creative industries are among the places where the impact of artificial intelligence is already being felt, obviously. So this isn't like a future possibility. This is something that's unfolding now. And so we really appreciate you being here as part of this discussion because as we move into the policymaking processes this year and move the policy that we're working on now through the UN system, we really need your participation. So today at this AI summit, it's not only the summit, it is also a consultation. So when we do get to the interventions portion of this panel, we would love to hear from those of you in the room who would like to provide a consultation for us. And we're listening to you, and we are making policy that is informed and written by youth. So The hope today is with this panel, we're gonna hear from some experts in the creative industry and have an open dialogue with you here. So please feel free also to ask questions from the panel. With me today is, I'm Kelly Crisp, by the way. I am the vice president and co-founder of the International Organization of Youth. And so IOY launched this program here on International Youth Day to bring youth right into the center of this process. With me today is Darius Van Arman here. Darius Van Arman is the CEO of Secretly Music Group, the owner of Jagjaguar Records. That's an independent record label in Brooklyn, New York, and he currently serves as the CEO of Secretly Distribution, as well as the co-CEO of Secretly Group and Secretly Publishing. So some of their artists include Mitski, Phoebe Bridgers, Bon Iver, Japanese Breakfast, Faye Webster, Angel Olsen. You could probably elucidate us on some more of those. Darius also works on policy and has advocated for artists to the US Congress and is also an essayist living in Brooklyn, New York. Welcome. CEO · Darius Van Arman [49:09]: Thank you, Kelly, for having me, and thanks to all of you for being here and having me as well. My name again is Darius Van Arman, and I do live here in Brooklyn, New York, and I'm excited to share some of my perspective about artificial intelligence and where it intersects with creativity in the music industry. IOY · Vice President and Co-Founder · Kelly Crisp [49:34]: So let's see, here we go. Also we have Katrine Jensen here. She's a writer, a poet, a translator, and the executive director of the American Literary Translators Association. So she taught creative writing at Columbia University and literary translation at Columbia University. She's a colleague of mine from Columbia, and we were teaching there together at the same time. She also served as the acting director of literary translation at Columbia. A fact that I recently learned is that the UN celebrates translators day here at the United Nations. So Katrina's won every award. She's been a finalist or a winner of every translation award. including the National Translation Award in Poetry, the Dana Sharts Foundation's Young Artistic Elite Fellowship, among others, and was a finalist for Best Translated Book Awards and the PEN Award for Poetry in Translation. She is one of my favorite poets and translators. And also this is her book, Ancient Algorithms. This is a book of poetry in translation. It's a wonderful project. Thank you for being here, Katrine. ALTA · Executive Director · Katrine Jensen [50:49]: Well, first of all, thank you, Kelly, for that amazing introduction. And thank you also to the International Organization of Youth and to the UN for the opportunity to be here today. And thank you all for being here as well. As Kelly mentioned in her introduction, I'm a writer and a literary translator, which means someone who translates literary works such as fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction. I personally fell in love with literary translation as the world's greatest writing exercise. Some compare the translation of a literary work from one language to another to the translation of music from piano to violin. I myself like to think of a literary translation as a cover song performed on the page. When I first read the landmark resolution on AI, artificial intelligence, that the UN General Assembly adopted in 2024, I was grateful for its nuance and focus on sustainability. But at the same time, I was struck by what seemed to be an underlying assumption that supporting artificial intelligence systems means supporting innovation. In the field of literary translation, heavy use of AI has come to represent quite the opposite of innovation, passable work at best and slob at worst, while undermining the ecosystem of freelance opportunities and copyright protections that sustain human creators of innovative works in translation. In the past two years, literary translation has seen a concerning development in which some publishers are transitioning to AI or machine-produced translations and hiring human translators at much lower rates to post-edit entire computer-generated translations of book manuscripts. Or in the words of the celebrated literary translator and writer Frank Wynne, quote, Somebody will send me the gibberish that has been spewed out and I have to take this unwieldy blob of a text and turn it into a book." Returning to the idea of the literary translation as a cover song, I'd like to present you with a thought experiment. Imagine if Aretha Franklin had been asked to tweak an AI version of Otis Redding's "Respect" instead of coming up with her own iconic version of the song. Or if Hurt by Nine Inch Nails had been reimagined by AI instead of the heart-wrenching and undeniably human cover we know by Johnny Cash. To me, the equivalent in literary translation would be asking Anne Carson to clean up an AI-produced translation of Sappho's poetry instead of creating her unique vision for the modern classic If Not Winter. or having AI generate a new draft of the Odyssey based on centuries of archaic traditions instead of investing in the artistry of Emily Wilson's bestselling modern take on the work, which informed Christopher Nolan's recent box office hit. When considering a declaration on AI policy and governance, I invite us all to be mindful that consumer-facing LLMs are based on infringing material and to remember that AI does not always equal innovation. For this reason, we must adopt an artist-first approach to AI use in literary translation. Literary innovation depends on it, just as it depends on human writers. Thank you. Darius, could we please have a statement from you, sir? CEO · Darius Van Arman [55:02]: Sure. And thank you again, everyone. My name is Darius Van Arman, and I am from a company called Secretly. I'm part of the music industry, and I've been reflecting on a question related to music making. Are machines on the verge of achieving or even replacing human creativity. This feels especially relevant now because as large amounts of training data become accessible to artificial intelligence models, conditions are ripe for generative artificial intelligence to fully blossom. There's now a growing sense that generative AI will not only significantly impact the quality and volume of digital media available to the public, but also reshape how we create, experience culture, and connect as human beings. I currently co-lead a global group of independent music companies, all operating under the banner called Secretly. Like many other similar indies, we aim to broaden or diversify what is considered mainstream. We champion outlier artists working on the fringes and avoid investing in any creative effort that strives to be average or appeals to the lowest common denominator. While we don't shy away from commercial success, we're more driven by the desire to make a lasting and positive impact on culture than by the goal of maximizing streams or record sales. Therefore, it's no surprise that as independents, we're less than thrilled about a future where more and more art is derived from patterns of the past. For us, living in this kind of cultural hospice feels like waving the white flag on human progress, signaling through our collective body language that we accept or are resigned to the current state of the world. Let me talk for a moment about human artistry. Human artistry has evolved over a very long time span. As early human societies devoted fewer waking hours to hunting, gathering, and farming, people found more time to appreciate beauty and seek meaning and purpose. We were the first creatures to turn storytelling into song, doing so thousands of years ago. But bringing this back to the industry I'm a part of, the music industry, Only in the last 150 years have we been able to create permanent audio recordings of these musical poems. Relatively speaking, the recording industry is very young, a baby still in its cradle compared to other creative fields. And the legal framework it depends on internationally to be economically viable, such as copyright, is barely older. Several AI startups have emerged recently with the goal of generating music. These companies have collectively received billions of dollars of investment. While some of these companies have taken a cooperative approach with the music industry by licensing music rights and respecting human creative labor, others have chosen to directly challenge the copyright system. These music launderers argue that using existing works to train large language diffusion and transformer models to generate new music is fair use and is no different than what a human does when they listen to hundreds of records to learn how to write and perform songs. Some have taken even a bolder step, not only challenging copyright laws, but also questioning the value of the time that we as humans spend learning how to create and perform music. But many music creators, whether you're amateur or professional, find great joy in the everyday journey of music performance and production, Just as much as they do when they finish writing or mixing a song they're immensely proud of. It's similar to how a marathon runner feels, ecstatic at the end of a race, not because they've reached the finish line, but because they've experienced every bit of the distance between Marathon and Athens to get there. Also, music at its core is a language of connection, not only through its connective structure of notes, chords, rhythms, and sounds, but also in how humans from all over the world perform together, listen to music, and bond over it as a group. And the very way we feel connected to ideas and feelings that are powerfully conveyed in the body of song. Ultimately, what makes us human is our affinity for connection and meaning. And music, like all great art forms, is a vital conduit for them. The real issue the real important issue is what is becoming increasingly clear as more and more AI companies march forward at breakneck speed. It is what they prioritize above everything else, rapid product development, growth and earnings goals, and gaining control of various market segments. It's also what these AI companies are neglecting, the preservation of dignity and joy in labor and craftsmanship, responsible stewardship of the environment, proper respect for democratic systems, the effective free will of people in public discourse, the economic rights of other industries, and ensuring public safety, whether at an individual level, for example, a user's mental health, or on a societal level. What is being prioritized and what is not should be something all nations and all of you should be deeply concerned about. Let me conclude now with an observation. During times of great social upheaval, movements emerge that look toward the distant future or even an afterlife for salvation. Right now, if you're educated and somewhat technologically inclined, and regardless of your political views, it's hard to look at the world around us without feeling cynical, given the numerous problems we face. So it's easy to see why so many are drawn to the promise that AI and other technologies will lead us to some heaven elsewhere, whether in the distant future or on some planet like Mars. But even if you're inclined to think differently as a natural response to overly zealous tech evangelism in your midst, technology itself has never been the problem. Without it, we wouldn't have enough free time to write books or create and perform music. There'd be no guitars, pianos, computers, or word processors, or the many other tools and instruments that writers and artists rely on every day to create. Essentially, technology enables our pursuit of connection and meaning, often through artistic expression, which enriches our humanity. Even the so-called boogeyperson of artificial intelligence has many helpful uses. And like most issues, whether AI will ultimately be seen as a force for good or evil comes down to a question of balance. For the environmentalists, the important trade-off is whether the benefits AI generates outweighs its drawbacks, such as energy and water consumption. In the creative world, the key question becomes where to draw the line between AI supporting creatives and AI replacing them. Many creatives will have different views on where to draw this line. Ultimately, the broader creative community, which is also an international community, must lead this debate and collectively answer this question. However, for global independence like the music companies I'm a part of, there's one more task. We could help ensure that only creatives answer this question, not technologists, and by doing so, show that heaven still exists on earth. Thank you. This is Katrine, you first. I'm basing this on something that you said. I'm wondering, what do human translators bring to a text that AI can't do? And this question is rooted in my love for your translations specifically, because I'll have to say about Katrine that her translations She even refers to them sometimes in this article I'm holding here from, it's called the wrongness of translation. You refer to it as a mistranslation on purpose. You mistranslate often in order to get to the better, I guess the better meaning. I would love for you to talk about that a little bit. And what do human translators bring to AI in that regard that bring to a translation that AI can't? ALTA · Executive Director · Katrine Jensen [1:03:55]: Thank you again for being my cheerleader on this panel, Kelly. Well, first of all, it's a common misconception that you have to get as close word to word to the original text in literary translation. Actually, in order to get to the heart of a text, you often have to put away the original and recreate it from scratch. And like I said in my opening statement, it works very much like a cover song because you don't get the kind of beauty that you need and the cadence in a sentence that you need if you are just focused on the content and not the form. So we need human translators for the same reasons that we need human writers and human musicians and other human artists. I like to say that in literary translation as well as in other artistic disciplines, there's AI generated content and then there's human art. There's fast food and there's slow food. And someone Like Gabriel Garcia Marquez, for instance, waited three years for the literary translator Gregory Rabassa's schedule to clear so he could translate One Hundred Years of Solitude. And in an interview with the Paris Review, Garcia Marquez said, "A good translation is always a recreation in another language." That's why I have such great admiration for Gregory Rabassa. And in my own experience, achieving something like a pitch-perfect pun in translation or a unique tone and style or an image that haunts the reader is a writing process that just requires an approach that is quite opposite to what AI or machine-generated text has to offer. Examples of that include Susan Bernofsky's hilarious retranslation of Kafka's Metamorphosis, Mary Jo Bang's outrageously contemporary retranslation of Dante's Divine Comedy, Maria Davanni Headley's bold and feminist verse adaptation of Beowulf, and contemporary renewal of language includes one of my personal favorites, Danmei Che's award-winning translations of Kim Hye-soon's poetry. And then there's, of course, something like subtext and accuracy and sensitivity and cultural context, which I don't even have time to get into. IOY · Vice President and Co-Founder · Kelly Crisp [1:06:43]: Thank you. I was going to say that, you know, I mentioned earlier about the translators at the United Nations. There's an example of where human translators are really vital to even just this ecosystem here. So because of communication is there's so many nuances in communication. And so when you are talking about literary works, literary texts or poetry, really often the word itself as it is literally translated isn't as exciting or dazzling as the human connection translation, which is completely different a lot of times. So a mistranslation is sometimes the better opportunity. And so when I'm thinking also of like my colleague at IOY, Lamar Zala Gran, and how she uses when she's teaching young girls and women in Afghanistan because they can connect across languages quite easily using AI. And that's a utility that's just so vital to the work that a lot of us are doing. And so there are amazing uses for it as a way to connect. And then there are, and then when we're having a conversation about art and the creative industries, there is space for humans still. Even like the work on stage or something like that where AI really cannot go into those spaces. Darius, I have a question for you. Music sometimes transcends the humans who created it. And I used to be a musician, a creative artist on one of your now merged records, one of the labels that you work with. transcends, I know as a musician that the music sometimes transcends the humans who make it, and that's because the humans who receive it are moved by it in different ways. And then you have the introduction of technology, which you spoke about, and tech has really changed the way that we stream music or the way that records in the past have been brought to market. Are there actually AI, are there protections that could potentially help or benefit artists? I want to position it that way. What protections are there for artists that you envision? Are there any that would benefit artists? Because I'm thinking of streaming platforms, you know, as a, along this like evolutionary path and now AI. These are technology conversations that we've been having for years in this industry. And potentially creating more human connections, is that something that could happen using AI or the technological advances there? I'm thinking about how I learned about Mitski, one of your artists, and I learned about it from probably like how a lot of people learn about it, which is from social media. This is an artist that--. CEO · Darius Van Arman [1:09:39]: So yeah, I think there's like four questions in that one, but I'm gonna try to break it out a little bit. Again, thank you for having me, Kelly. Maybe a question for all of you first. How many musicians are here, or anyone with a musical background? Okay, and I think the answer here is gonna be almost everyone. How many of you listen to music in your daily lives? It's an important part of your human experience. The threat here is, and you're seeing it in the way technology is slowly making things easier and your experience is more passive, is music for the longest time, just like books, just like amazing poems, stories, songs, even before the written word, like when things were oral tradition when we shared stories before we were writing stories verbally around the campfire with family. These were the ways that we talked about our humanity, how we connected to each other. And when music is part of our daily lives, it maintains that connection. It maintains the sense that we have purpose and meaning and It's what brings us together more than it divides us. Musicians are very important. Music makers, songwriters are very important, just like writers are. My hope is that for hundreds of years, we will have creative expression, human creative expression continue to make us feel, how can I say, closer as human beings, but also achieve a better understanding of who we are, also be entertained, also enjoy our time on this planet. These are all very important things for society. And the threat that AI has, if it's not tempered in a responsible way, is that it replaces that creativity. And so you're asking Kelly, what are things that AI can do that helps protect creativity or protect artistry? And Just like most things, it's a question of balance. And like most tools, they can be used for good or for bad. There are opportunities for ethical licensing of creative works, of songwriters and writers and artists and performers, people with beautiful voices that they've trained over years. entering into agreements with technology companies on equitable terms. There can be fair approaches to the creative industry working hand in hand with tech interests to continue the legacy of human creativity making us all better. And so, you know, of course the question is, How do we get to that? Is it a legal framework? Is it a social framework? How do we continue to value what's important as human beings? And I think we don't have enough time now to really go into all the particular solutions, but I think there are a couple principles that are very important. One is that we recognize the value of human labor that's put towards creative endeavors. If a musician is making a song, spending hours, hundreds of hours making music, they deserve the dignity of a fair wage for their work. And that principle should be a bedrock principle that we all agree on worldwide. Similarly, if we have intellectual property in different parts of our world community, we need to recognize the value of that intellectual property as being something that reflects values in those communities, that is something that can't just go to big global companies for free. So we have to protect the interests of different communities in protecting their cultural heritage. I can go on and on, but that's maybe some of the answers I have for you, Kelly. State of Palestine · Mohammed Abu Zaytoon [1:15:55]: Good afternoon everyone and before we even get to regulating AI. Access, access to it is already uneven in Palestine damaged infrastructure and restricted connectivity already shut youth out of reliable internet access and that any AI transitions assumes. So other than that, my ask is to create a permanent youth advisory council that reviews national AI policies before they are adopted, not after as an afterthought conclusion or consolation, but built into the approval process itself. Youth are the ones who will spend the most years living under whatever gets decided this decade. And here's what worries me the most, the pace. The Industrial Revolution took decades to reshape labor markets, and people still struggled. The bottleneck was the adoption window. Even if nobody planned it that way, the society got time to adapt almost by accident. AI diffuses through software, not factories. Economists are increasingly warning it could restructure entire job categories in a fraction of time. Nobody knows how exactly fast and how fast it is, but if it outpaces how fast people can retrain, that's not innovation. That is harm with better branding. So I would ask this declaration to include real limits, not a ban, but pacing, phased rollout timelines for high impact sectors. We as the youth are not anti-AI. We are the ones who have to live in the labor market it creates. Build that urgency into this declaration, please. IOY · Vice President and Co-Founder · Kelly Crisp [1:17:58]: Thank you. When most people hear the words artificial intelligence, they probably think about robots, ChatGPT, self-driving cars, or the future of technology. As a 17-year-old boy of Caribbean descent, I think about something else. What happens to our culture when technology becomes better at recreating it than we are at preserving it ourselves? AI can help us preserve our culture. We can use technology to record elders telling stories, document endangered languages, archive music, and make cultural knowledge accessible to young people who may live thousands of miles away from the Caribbean. But there's also a serious question we need to ask, who gets to teach AI what Caribbean culture is? If an AI system learns about our music, language, stories, and traditions primarily from information collected online, it may not understand the meaning behind them. It might reproduce a Jamaican phrase without understanding when it should be used. It might generate a Caribbean song that sounds authentic but has no connection to the experiences that created the music in the first place. That is the danger of losing intangible culture. As a young person, I don't think the answer is to reject AI. Honestly, that would be impossible. AI is already part of our generation's lives. Instead, I think we need to take control of how AI interacts with our culture. We should use AI to preserve our languages rather than align them to disappear. We should digitize oral histories before the people who carry those memories are gone. We should teach young Caribbean people how to use technology to document their own traditions. And most importantly, Caribbean communities as well as the youth should have a say in how their cultural knowledge is collected, represented, and used. Being Caribbean in the age of AI should not mean choosing between our heritage and our future. We should be able to have both. And lastly, I'll leave on this note, AI can remember our stories, but it should never become the reason we should stop telling them ourselves. I would like to thank Mr. Mustafa and the esteemed guests for giving me this opportunity to help shape AI policy. My name is Aysan Jahangah and I am a mental health counselor graduate of Teachers College, Columbia University. In my work, I see how often people seek support when they are at their most vulnerable. which is why I believe mental health needs special attention as we shape AI policy. People increasingly turn to AI during moments of anxiety, loneliness, trauma, addiction, and crisis. I suggest four priorities. First, transparency. As Dr. Philippe has said, AI cannot replace trust, empathy, and human connection. Therefore, users should clearly understand that AI is not a therapist and know its limitations. Second, stronger safety standards, including clear crisis and referral protocols. Third, strong privacy protections for sensitive psychological data. And fourth, human oversight with mental health professionals from diverse cultural backgrounds with lived experiences involved in designing and evaluating these systems. Most importantly, AI should support human agency and access to care, not replace meaningful human relationships or professional support. Our goal should not simply be to make mental health AI more available, it should be to make it safe, ethical, accountable, and human centered. Thank you. Artificial intelligence is no longer a future prediction. It is an active force writing a global education, labor markets, and international development. For the global youth demographic, AI is not novelty, it is our daily reality. Yet a dangerous governance gap persists. Young people are the primary drivers and adopters of these technologies. Yet we remain locked out of the high level rooms where their architecture and regulations are being decided. We must shift from peripheral consumers to central stakeholders. We cannot allow the technological advancement to widen the global divide or deepen economic inequalities. Innovation without equity is not a progress. Therefore, we call upon the summit to institutionalize youth representation within multilateral AI forums, mandate comprehensive digital literacy, and enforce strict safeguards against algorithmic bias and privacy violations. innovation detached from human rights is a liability. Our digital tools must actively align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, prioritizing human dignity over pure profit. Let us commit to co-architecting an AI ecosystem with global youth rather than merely for them. Hello? Hello delegates. Thank you for allowing me to give my opinion. My name is Emma Chu. I am 12 years old going into seventh grade. AI is already a tool to teach kids. The question is how can we make AI more accessible? The rise of AI has brought challenges and changes to children whose minds that have not been fully developed. AI continues to grow and spread around the world. Another question is how can we make AI more accurate? And if we cannot, we should create more accurate systems to detect AI misinformation. Artificial intelligence has no limits. When children use it to answer a question, AI can sometimes make an answer that can be completely wrong. This puts them in a compromised position of being misinformed and potentially spreading false information. One of the biggest issues with AI is when it doesn't know the answer, it makes something fake. Some mistakes are easy to spot, but students don't see the errors. A recent study shows that AI incorrectly cites their sources 60% of the time. AI has hindered many children's learning of their and their mental state and how they interact. AI has no information and emotions and when kids talk to them they're just talking to an emotionless subject. AI has replaced a lot of jobs but if used properly I believe it can create a better future. Thank you. IOY · Vice President and Co-Founder · Kelly Crisp [1:26:47]: Thank you, Emma. My name is Ann Lee, and I am a regional focal point for the major group for children and youth, global caucus on peace and security. Today, I've heard a great deal about the transformative potential of AI for young people. But if we're going to be actually serious about ensuring that AI works for youth, we must first address a foundational and fundamental obstacle, that being the lack of youth representation in the data sets that form the foundation of AI. As Dr. Felipe Polier mentioned in this morning's panel, young people make up the majority of AI's users and beneficiaries, yet our needs remain marginally represented in the data used to develop these systems. AI is, in many ways, a reflection of what it's fed. When the data it's given disproportionately reflects certain demographics, the solutions it generates will inevitably just reproduce those gaps. And this doesn't affect just young people. This issue creates a domino effect in which these skewed AI tools simply exacerbates existing inequalities and make it harder to develop solutions that work for everyone. If the data does not reflect the diversity of our societies, the technology built from that data cannot fully serve them either. This rings true in different disciplines, such as music, like Mr. Van Arman highlighted. For example, imagine an AI music bot is given simply country music to generate music off of. No matter how many prompts you give it, it'll never be able to produce rap music simply because it's not given the knowledge to do so. And so as we continue to discuss how to develop AI ethically and equitably, I urge us to start with investigating the foundation. If we want AI to work for everyone, everyone must be represented in the data that builds it. Thank you. IOY · Vice President and Co-Founder · Kelly Crisp [1:28:53]: Thank you. For more than 20 years, I've practiced architecture and design. And in that time, I've witnessed the tools of my profession evolve at an extraordinary pace. When I began my training, we used to draw by hand. Today, I can describe a detail into my phone, and within minutes, AI can research it, visualize it, test it, estimate cost, and outline next steps. AI is already making creative practice faster, more informed, and more accessible. In architecture, we use it to explore ideas, process vast amounts of data, verify compliance, and communicate concepts that once required weeks. that democratization matters. These tools give more people the opportunity to understand, participate in, and pursue creative work. But we should be careful not to confuse access to creative tools with the source of creativity itself. Creative work is not objective. It's interpretive. It's intuitive, cultural, and deeply human. There is a profound difference between processing information and understanding what it feels like to inhabit a space. No dataset can fully capture lived experience, and it's what every creative professional brings to their craft. The fear that technology may replace creative professionals is not new. Yet today's concerns are legitimate because AI can reproduce the products of creative work without sharing the human experience that give that work meaning. Our conversation today should endure AI. It should preserve human agency and authorship. expand equitable access to creative tools, but ensure that those efficiencies gained are reinvested into human creativity, not used to replace it. Because human experience is not merely another input to the creative process, it's the source that gives it meaning. It is a privilege to address this distinguished gathering of the United Nations on International Youth Day. Today, we recognize young people not merely as beneficiaries of development, but as innovators, decision makers, community leaders, and essential partners in building a more peaceful, equitable, sustainable, and technologically capable world. I stand before you as an American Pakistani businessman and analyst, but more importantly, as someone who strongly believes that the greatest investment we can make is not simply in companies, infrastructure, or technology, It is an investment in people, and particularly in young people. Today, we meet at a defining moment. Artificial intelligence stands at the heart of the fourth industrial revolution, a transformation bringing together the digital, physical, and biological worlds, and redefining how societies learn, work, govern, communicate, and innovate. Unlike previous technological transformations, this revolution is advancing at an unprecedented pace through AI, robotics, data, connectivity, biotechnology, and automation. Its impact will not be limited to one industry or one country. It will shape every nation and every generation. AI is already transforming economies, public services, education, healthcare, security, entrepreneurship, and the nature of work itself. For young people, this presents both a challenge and an extraordinary opportunity. The jobs of tomorrow will require new skills, adaptability, creativity, ethical judgment, and digital confidence. But there is something we must remember. Talent is everywhere, opportunity is not. A brilliant young man can be born in New York, Karachi, Nairobi, Riyadh, Dhaka, or any small village thousands of miles away from the world's largest technology centers. Their potential may be equal, however, their access may not be. This is where AI can become one of the great equalizers of our time. A student can learn beyond the walls of a classroom. A young entrepreneur can build a business serving customers thousands of miles away. A researcher can analyze information at a speed that was unimaginable just a few years ago. But this promise will mean very little unless access, skills, credentials, and opportunities are shared fairly. If we fail to prepare young people, technological progress may deepen existing inequalities. However, if we succeed, AI can become a powerful instrument of inclusion, dignity, and sustainable development. Allow me to share the background where I was born, Pakistan and the AIE opportunity. As an American Pakistani, I have had the privilege of seeing opportunity from both sides of the world. I have witnessed the ecosystem of entrepreneurship, technology, and innovation in the United States. And I have seen the tremendous talent, resilience, and ambition of young people in Pakistan. Pakistan has a large and dynamic young population. This is not simply a demographic statistics. It can become one of our greatest economic advantage, but only if we equip our young people for the economy they are entering rather than the economy that existed 20 to 30 years ago. AI literacy and digital capability are no longer optional. They are becoming essential for national competitiveness and meaningful participation in the global economy. Pakistan is responding to this transformation through innovation designed to strengthen digital skills and empower its youth. Our one important example is ACT-AI, Awareness, competency and tools training for artificial intelligence an initiative associated with the state-owned enterprise AXI act AI focuses on practical practical capabilities in areas including generative AI a genetic AI systems AI enabled productivity tools automation and sector specific applications What I find particularly important is accessibility. Students from diverse academic disciplines can participate without requiring previous AI or programming experience. By making AI learning accessible and free of cost, the objective is simple. Young Pakistani men and women should not be left behind in the world in the AI revolution. They should have the knowledge, practical tools, ethical grounding, and confidence to use AI for education, employment, entrepreneurship, public service, and innovation. But skills are not enough. We also need credible ways of young people to demonstrate their skills. Rethinking education and credentials are very important. Traditional degrees and qualifications will continue to have tremendous value in our lives, but technology is changing too quickly for education to stop when a degree is completed. We need learning systems that are more flexible, accessible, and responsive to emerging skills. That is where micro certifications can pay an important role. Focused credentials can complement from degrees by allowing people to demonstrate specific market relevant competencies. They can create pathways toward employment, freelancing, entrepreneurship, higher education, and lifelong learning. Pakistan is advancing this through micro search, a government backed initiative focused on making accessible internationally aligned and market relevant skill certifications available at minimal cost. For a young person whose barriers may be financial, geographic, or simply lack of access, this can make a meaningful difference in his or his family's life. Because the future should not belong only to those who can afford this opportunity. Now opportunity must become accessible to talent where that talent exists. From consumers to creators. And there's another distinction we must make. We should not prepare young people simply to use AI. We must prepare them to build with AI, innovate with AI, question AI, govern AI, and lead with AI. They must also understand its ethical, social, and economical consequences. Because intelligence, whether artificial or human, becomes meaningful only when it is paired with judgment, responsibility, and purpose. AI can access enormous amount of information, but technology does not replace compassion. Algorithms do not replace character. Automation does not replace ambition. And machines cannot determine the kind of society we want to become. That responsibility remains ours, building a global partnership. No country can navigate this transformation alone. We need stronger partnerships across borders to share knowledge, develop skills, frameworks, sport, youth-led innovation, and expand access to credible micro-certification ecosystems. Governments, international organizations, educational institutions, technology companies, businesses, and civil society must work together. Pakistan stands ready to contribute to this shared effort. Through initiatives such as ACT-AI and MicroSearch, the goal is to help create a generation equipped with practical AI capabilities, ethical foundations, and recognized credentials that can strengthen their educational and professional journeys. And as we expand AI infrastructure, we must also remember the sustainability. AI cloud computing and data centers require enormous infrastructure and energy. The digital economy we build must therefore be efficient, responsible. Our technological progress should not come at the expense of the generation we are trying to empower. To the youth and young people of the world, so today from this platform, At the United Nations, my message to young people is simple. Do not wait for the future to arrive. Build it. And I always tell everybody, US is a land of opportunity. We come here, we seek for a lot of opportunities. However, we must not wait for the opportunities to come to us. We must create some opportunities to become who we want to become today. But above everything else, build with the purpose. And to governments, businesses, universities, and international institutions, our responsibility is equally clear. Let us build systems of learning that are inclusive, accessible, and trusted. Let us ensure that artificial intelligence expands opportunity rather than inequality. Let us give every young person regardless of geography, gender, income, or background, the skills, credentials, and confidence to participate in this new world. AI will become faster, machines will become smarter, technology will become more powerful, but the greatest technology human will ever possess is still the potential of the human mind. So when history looks back at this AI revolution, Let it not say that we simply built the smartest machines that world had ever seen. Let it say that we built the most empowered generation the world had ever known. Let it say we did not use AI to replace human potential. Let it say that we did not use AI to replace human potential. And I like to share a little bit more here. Everyone is fear of having the humans losing the jobs. I have a different perspective here. AI will not replace our jobs. Only person who will replace your job is who is working as an AI. And this is how I like to conclude today's session. Thank you very much. Moderator · Ali Mustafa [1:52:31]: Thank you, Mr. Ahmed. Next, I would like to give the floor to Mr. Zain Northcott from the permanent mission of the United Arab Emirates. UAE · Advisor · Zain Northcott [1:52:45]: Thank you very much, Ali. Is this working? Yes. Yes, great. Yeah, thank you, Ali. Ali and I have worked together for a very long time. I think we're at the-- For as a boss. We're nearing the end of our youth phase, but we've, yeah, I think really we've seen youth engagement in the UN really expand in an amazing way in the last few years. Thank you to the International Organization of Youth and MGCY who are doing really good work to advance this. And it's interesting, since I started working around the UN, AI is sort of almost the first really massive new issue that's coming completely brand new into the UN for the first time. And I think there's really a great opportunity for you as young people to really be at the forefront of shaping that since you often really know the technology better than almost anyone else does. I'm currently working as an advisor at the permanent mission of the UAE, as Ali mentioned, covering climate, sustainability, water issues, but also AI. So I wanted to just give a bit of perspective about what's happening here at the UN and therefore how you can maybe feed into this. Thinking about this challenge of the skills and workforce around AI, I think as you also heard from Tanvir, there's different ways of looking at it. There's very alarmist takes and there's other takes which say, well, actually AI is going to create new jobs as well. The UN, one of the major things to come into effect just this year is the UN has established an independent international scientific panel on AI. This is meant to be really authoritative, completely neutral, trustworthy body of AI experts. And already they're beginning to have an influence on the global discourse, I think. Their first report came out just in July. And they looked at this and they said, looking at data across different countries, yes, it's very true in some cases that AI is taking away a lot of jobs. Among workers in the United States between the ages of 22 to 25, they've seen roughly 15% decrease in employment opportunities for sectors where they're exposed to AI. But similar studies among the same population in Denmark, for example, there's been almost no impact on the employment. And so it really suggests that there is structures and governance that countries can put in place to prevent job losses from AI and even to make sure that new opportunities are created. Working with the UAE has been very interesting because they have a lot of initiatives, very forward-looking on this. AI is actually taught comprehensively even in schools, even to children of quite young ages. the whole country, the government subscribed for the entire country, a subscription to ChatGPT. And so it's really advancing the idea that, you know, let's not fight this, let's embrace it, it is the future, but we just really need to make sure young people are coming into the workforce with the skills to be effective and so they're not, they're working with it rather than being replaced by it. UAE also appointed the first ever dedicated minister of AI. There's a dedicated university of AI. You also need to think about the dangers and there's a very comprehensive set of laws in the UAE on child safety and protection of young people from AI. And I think really if things like this are in place, then these issues can be mitigated. I already mentioned Denmark, it's another example. They have very significant government programs to ensure if you do lose your job, there's really advanced programs in place to help you find new work. And adult education is very well supported. Singapore also has a lot of free adult education that you can access throughout your whole lifetime. Estonia has also just recently launched a new initiative to embed AI in their education system. These are things which I think you as young people for this paper that you're putting together and will complete today, you can call for these things and hopefully get a really good response because there is sort of proven case studies out there. Ali asked me to also quickly touch on the connection of climate and AI. I think it's very relevant for young people again for this reason, I'm sure many of you are perhaps interested in climate change issues. There's a bit of a concern in that we have all this opportunity from AI, but it does use a huge amount of energy and also water. And so it could potentially risk our progress on climate action as well. But again, I think there's a lot of opportunity out there. A lot of companies, including in the UAE like Masdar, are really investing in how can we create AI more sustainably. And thinking about workforce, I think really that could be a sector where there could be opportunities for young people if you develop some expertise in that. In terms of how this is being addressed at the UN, I mentioned sort of national level policies will be very important and these are things you might want to take up with your own government in your own country. But in terms of what the UN is doing, I already mentioned recently the UN established the scientific panel on AI. The other very significant body which emerged out of the pact for the future that was agreed at the UN in 2024 is this new process called the Global Dialogue on AI Governance. Hopefully many of you might have heard of this. This is really the first attempt within the UN to look at AI governance internationally. There has been sort of regional efforts on this, but never something in the UN, which obviously is so important since it's where every single country has a voice as being a member state. So the first global dialogue took place in Geneva in July. It had four themes, the opportunities and implications of AI, bridging AI divide, so that's really looking at how we can enhance capacity of AI, particularly in developing countries where there isn't technology and infrastructure ready and internet access, which Ali mentioned as well. The third pillar is the safety and trustworthiness of AI. And there's a fourth one on the human rights, transparency and accountability of AI. So now we just had one dialogue. It's sort of yet to see what will emerge from this. The second global dialogue will be in New York alongside the STI Forum in spring next year. So if any of you are based in New York, that should be a really good opportunity to potentially get involved there. And it's really a multi-stakeholder dialogue. So civil society, including youth, should really have a lot of opportunities to feed into that. And again, this paper which you're producing today, I would really encourage you to think how you maybe get some visibility for that at the next global dialogue on AI governance. And I'm sure a lot of member states here at the UN would be really excited to hear what young people have to say. Thank you very much. Happy to take more questions later if there is. Moderator · Ali Mustafa [2:00:29]: Thank you, Zan. So Zan and I, Zan was my boss when I started working for the UN Youth Assembly at the time back in 2017, 2018, and I was his intern. So yes, that was almost 10 years ago. Yes, thank you, Zan. So next and the last speaker we have, I would like to give the floor to Ms. Shaker. that's correct. If you can pronounce your name and she's a professor at the UMass. You have to press that button. Yes. UMass · Professor of STEM Education · Dr. Saknoza Khayumova [2:01:15]: Hello everybody. My name is Dr. Saknoza Khayumova. I have a PhD in STEM education and I'm a professor, a full professor of STEM education at the same time, a director of STEM innovation and research in education. So today I was asked to respond to a couple questions related to the AI future of the work and how AI is changing from the perspective of research in education. So what I see both in my own field and based on the research that the AI is already already changing how work is getting done. So AI is not necessarily replacing humans. It's changing the ways in which people are approaching the work. Even in professions that are not going in the direction of AI or not using AI, AI is being used by everybody. And I'm going to speak specifically about how AI is being used by young people, such as many of you are. both in the context of the United States and other parts of the world based on the current research that we have. So across the fields, and I'm speaking about K through 12, which is kindergarten through 12th grade, as well as college, what we are seeing is that the young people are using AI to produce first drafts of the speeches, of the papers, and the value is shifting from knowing how to improving AI or how to improve what we know to value is shifting towards tasks that are using AI to make things more efficient. So AI is used to generate code, AI is used to accomplish menial tasks. AI is used to make PowerPoints. You probably are using AI to find answers, some of the questions. Some students called the AI to me a new version of Wikipedia where you know you should not be trusting, but yet you still use, right? In my own experience with students, both in college and K through 12 level, I'm seeing AI take over portions of work that involve drafting, coding, searching, summarizing, analyzing patterns, generating designs, routine decision support, as well as you probably know, students are also using AI to take tests, to use for tests, to answer multiple choice questions, both in math, chemistry, biology, you name it. So what is then happening and how does this, what kind of implication does this data have towards the workforce. So according to me, AI is going to redefine what we call expertise and competence. So as you all know, and I'm assuming you all know it because many of you have gone through kindergarten through sixth grade at least, some of the menial tasks that you used Whether it's learning how to read, making sense of what you are reading, making sense of what you are writing, rewriting, some of those tasks now are less and less used by the youth because AI can produce everything. Supposedly it can produce the right answers. Supposedly it can produce good drafts. So whether we like it or not, young people like you all, many of them are using it. And I would agree with you that there are some young people who are also worried about the climate justice and refusing to use it. But the portion of those youth who are not using AI is much smaller than the portion of the youth who are using it. So for me, particularly in STEM, I think the profound shift is happening. Knowing how to produce an answer or write the code is becoming less distinctive given the AI, but knowing what questions to ask, how to frame a problem, how to evaluate what AI is generating to you, how to connect the knowledge, the technical knowledge that AI can give you to real human and social, environmental and economic problems That is becoming more important of a question. Because as you all know, for us to be able to make sense of a problem, it's important for us to know the context of the problem. It's important to be able to know to the extent where we can talk about the problem. But if AI is going to be producing the first drafts, then the ones who are across the screen should be able to evaluate what those answers mean? What the meanings of the words that are being used by the AI? Are they objectifying things? Are they giving meaning to the meaningful things? What is happening with the text? What is happening, what's being produced? So to me, that is the kind of competence that eventually we will see as emerging as important. And again, not that AI will replace. But the ways in which we will be approaching education and the ways in which we will be approaching competence and expertise will has to shift. So where is the greater risk of young people being left behind was one of the questions that I was asked. the greatest risk is not for me simply that some people will have access to chat GTP or another AI tool and others will not because we've seen this uh technological divide we've talked about it when the laptops were not available for everybody we talked about this when uh Wi-Fi was not available to everybody and we know from the research it's not the question of whether or not we have a laptop or a cell phone or a Wi-Fi the question is how are these tools used and towards what ends? And what we know from the research, schools and education settings that allow students to ask and to ask meaningful questions, to solve meaningful problems, and to use AI towards those ends will develop the kind of expertise that will be needed. And there will also be schools that, or education settings that will be afraid the students will either cheat or the answers will be responded by the AI and the focus will shift to instead of working with the youth again controlling youth in ways that the AI will replace the calculators so the divide the technical divide can actually widen again not because young people do not have an access to an AI or do not have an access to these tools the divide will go further and further why because the way in which we need to be working with AI will be different in different settings. And as many of you probably know from the research, many of the inequities are actually intertwined, whether it's technical divide or if it's social, economic, one is not separate from the other, as well as the climate and environmental issues. So again, where the greatest risk for young people, it's how how are they being allowed to grapple with the question of AI just like you all are here, and this is such a huge privilege for us to be able to be here, to be able to grapple with these questions versus if the students are just using AI to answer the questions, to do menial tasks, and contribute to, unfortunately, to the already existing both environmental and climate and other inequities that we have in the society. There is another equity issue that comes to me as an educator, which is access to AI is yes, necessary, as I said already, but meaningful intellectual participation with AI is the question that we need to be all grappling with. And the last question that I was asked One recommendation that I would make, and I believe working with the youth that like you all, youth are much smarter than many of us. So please take my advice with the, you know, with the grain of salt based on the research that I've read, one recommendation that I would have would be not necessarily to teach young people how to use AI, but really think about how to think, question, create, and solve problems. Those are the things that we will not be able to replace. And I will give you one anecdote from my own experience. Currently, I'm working with many PhD students. And, In the past, when I was myself a PhD student, we would go to a library, and maybe I'm too old, we would go to a library and we would have to read 10, 20 books, 100, 200 papers on a subject be able to develop any kind of meaningful idea about that knowledge. Right now, AI can do it in a second. And I'm growing to see how students are using AI to summarize papers, to summarize research, to summarize ideas, to synthesize ideas. And I think that if one advice I'm going to leave you with, being able to read, being able to grapple with other people's ideas, being able to engage is by itself an intellectual endeavor that we should preserve. One of my favorite authors, Mikhail Bakhtin, once said, you know, our words have ours and have someone else's. So AI is using 100% somebody else's words, ideas, and synthesizing by the algorithms that it's using. And I would suggest for you to bring your own voices, to bring your own ideas, to bring your own experiences and context, and that AI cannot replace. And do not give up that intellectual endeavor to anybody. Moderator · Ali Mustafa [2:11:44]: Thank you so much for your valuable contribution. I work directly with vulnerable and underserved communities, and through that work, I have learned something very important. Talent is everywhere. Opportunity is not. Today we're discussing how AI can transform our present and our future. But before that, we can talk about, we must talk about who actually has access to it. For many young people in underserved communities, the barriers began long before AI. They may not have reliable internet, they might not have a computer at home, their communities may lack access to new technologies, they might face language barriers, financial limitations, or never have the opportunity to develop digital and AI skills. There are not only technology barriers, there are barriers to inclusion, education, and opportunity. When a young person cannot access the same tools other are using to learn, develop skills and prepare for the future, we risk creating another generation where opportunity depends on income, your neighborhood, or the resource available to your family. We cannot solve this by simply by providing technology. We also need these young people at the table. When government institution and the private sector develop policies around AI, vulnerable and underserved communities must be present at the table, actively participating in the creation of the policies that will shape the future. Because the people who experience these barriers understand them in ways that data alone cannot explain. So as we shape the future of AI, let's invest in affordable. Actor and Co-Founder · Sarah Utterback [2:14:52]: Oh, there we go. Good afternoon. My name is Sarah Utterback, and I am an actor and co-founder of I Am A Theater Company in Los Angeles. And I've had the honor and joy of working in the craft of acting for 25 years. Historically, theater has acted as a live shared mirror of the human experience that builds empathy and awakens collective awareness around political, social, moral, and emotional truths. In that sense, theater and its counterparts, film and television, are deeply connected to consciousness. We still do not fully understand what consciousness is or where it comes from. So I question, how can we responsibly use AI to replicate any art form whose fundamental material is something we do not yet fully understand? There is a philosophical concept called qualia. It's the subjective experience of being alive. What it feels like to experience pain, loss, desire, fear, love, or meaning. AI can simulate the expression of these experiences, but I believe the difference between simulating consciousness and being conscious matters greatly in my creative industry. And acting qualia is part of what actors bring to the job. So when AI captures and digitizes an actor's face, voice, body, emotional expression, and years of lived experience, we must consider who owns that representation, who consents, who is compensated, and when technology cross the line from assisting the artist to replacing the artist? These are questions of human dignity, agency, consent, and the value of creative labor. Technology should serve the artist, not quietly become the artist while the artist disappears. The missed signal was created from a simple belief. Young people deserve a voice in healthcare advocacy and the decisions that shape our communities. We built this initiative to raise critical awareness on health emergencies, bridge dangerous gaps in health literacy, such as recognizing early stroke warning science and bring youth into medicine and advocacy. Yet while leaders debate ethics, communities face preventable health crises simply because implementation lacks basic transparency. At a time when world leaders increasingly lose touch with the difference between right and wrong or simply choose not to care, we must rely on the uncorrupted morality and empathy of youth. Young people have not been bought out by corporations or lobbies. Our moral compass is intact, but our access to real time information and policy literacy is blocked. That is why we are developing a completely free AI powered program for youth empowering them to interpret complex policy audit health commitments and ensure politicians are actually delivering on the laws they pass in our favor we don't need leaders to act as our moral compass we need legal frameworks that recognize youth as the moral and technical Auditors keeping governments in check if institutions will not hold themselves accountable young people will use the data to do it for them thank you. So it is made by a human being. But as if we can say right now, like, human being are replaced by AI. So I don't think so this is justified for our upcoming generation. So for me, AI is a tool. As I'm a student of cybersecurity, it's a tool, it's not a substitute. How could AI can be a replacement for a human being, where human being are the best creation on the earth? As I said, AI is a tool, so we can use it for educational purpose. So as I'm from Asia, so where we have a shortage of teachers, so we can use it for educational purpose. And technology should exist to solve humanity's greatest bottlenecks, like a lack of education access, health care, disparities, or manufacture human beings. So the crisis is not the technology itself, but it's a misalignment of our priorities. It's how we choose to apply it. Today is International Youth Day, so I want to leave a message for all the youth. We are not a product of optimization. States are actively trying to pass laws that restrict artificial intelligence and targeting one of many deep fakes. Deep fakes have been have not been as much of a danger as it is now as AI gets more accurate in its depictions, which can and will ruin many lives, especially in this digital age where it is more common to find your on social media than actual news channels. I came to this conversation as a young person born in Dhaka, Bangladesh, now studying and working in the United States at the intersection of risks, data, and AI. So when I think about AI, I don't think about some distant future. I think about what is already happening around us. And I think some students using it to learn fast, young professionals using it to do work they could not have done a few years ago. without help and small teams suddenly being able to build things that once required a huge company. I've seen that personally through my work with data, risk, technology and AI and it has changed how I research, solve problems and honestly I think that a young person, what a young person is capable of doing. My name is Matthew Young, and through my work in government and the Superior Court system of my home state, I've had the opportunity to see how technology and policy intersect. And shape real human outcomes. I'm not here as an AI expert. I'm here as a young person who will enter this changing workforce soon. Some jobs will disappear, others will change, and new ones will emerge. In courtrooms, AI can help organize evidence, review documents, and identify patterns across large amounts of information. That can save lawyers and judges a lot of time, but speed is not the same as judgment. Courtroom deals with people's rights, freedom, and lives. I see it every day. If an AI system makes a mistake or reflects a bias in the data it was trained on. The consequences can be very real. The same is true in policymaking. AI can help governments analyze data, identify trends, and understand the potential effects of different policies, but it should not decide what is fair. It should not decide whose interests matter most or what interests get ignored. As AI continues to develop and grow into the legal and governing spaces of our world, the regulations surrounding it needs to keep up and keep every government and legal system accountable. In its rapid implementation, as well as in its accessibility to the general public, it has seeped its role into the workforce as well. When one is asked what they'd like to be when they grow up, their answer is often influenced by detectors that determine whether a field would heavily be relied on by AI, something that no youth entering the workforce should be worrying about, and drives many away from pursuing their future goals. AI undoubtedly has an increasing role in our everyday lives, with 122 million plus people using generative AI tools daily. However, in vital fields such as psychiatric and neuroimaging, AI models had an 83% risk rate of bias in the United States, often due to the usage of smaller sample sizes. If AI is further incorporated into the workforce, it is imperative that they are maintaining fairness and equity when utilized. We are facing and anticipating significant shortages of specialist clinicians alongside an increasing demand for diagnostic imaging and cancer screening. If we continue delivering care exactly as we do today, these pressures risk creating growing backlogs and delays in cancer diagnoses. AI could help us increase speed and capacity. I propose three priorities. First, evidence before deployment. High impact medical AI should be prospectively evaluated across diverse populations, healthcare systems, and clinical settings. Hello everyone, my name is Matthew Lee, and as we meet here at the UN headquarters on this very Wednesday for International Youth Day, I think there's something especially important about young people having this conversation about ourselves. One thing I keep thinking about is what happens to creativity when coming up with an idea becomes almost too easy. This past summer, I attended Yale Young Global Scholars, where my group worked on food insecurity and climate changes in coastal Bangladesh. We eventually developed a plan for a community owned hydroponic farming system supported by rainwater collection. Everyone saw this problem differently. We disagreed. Some ideas didn't work and to be frank with you at times we had no idea. Where we were going with it. But eventually we took pieces from different perspectives and built something that none of us would have come up with alone. I worry that youth today are starting to skip that part. When we're stuck, we can ask AI for 10 ideas in seconds. When we don't know how to phrase something, it can be phrased for us. And when millions of us are turning to the same large language models for that starting point, our work gradually starts to look and sound more alike. Don't get me wrong, I use AI. I think most students either do or will, but there's a distinction between using it to push an idea further and using it to give you the idea in the first place. This year's International Youth Day recognizes the young people, that young people come from very different contexts, even when we do share many of the same aspirations. I think--. They fear that their searches, photos, voices, locations, and online activities could be monitored in the wrong way and be misused. But I want to challenge one idea. Privacy concerns should not stop us from using technology. With the rapid development of AI and technology, we should be using technology now more than ever. But these concerns restrict the population using technology. This isn't the fault of AI, but the people that regulate and develop it, the companies behind the privacy policies that have not been transparent to the public. AI has the potential to be one of the most useful pieces of technology. Ever made, helping in fields like healthcare, tech, law, and diplomacy. But if these risk factors exist, we are not able to use this piece of technology to its fullest potential. Artificial intelligence, as everyone might know, is an extremely versatile technology, one of the most versatile in our generation. It's involved with the transformation of medicine and many other fields. For example, CRISPR, a gene editing tool, is increasingly being paired with AI, as AI assists with analyzing the genetic data that the tool needs to make revolutionary edits. We can modify DNA with this move. But with that power, as said in the workshop before, comes a great responsibility. This growth of AI in the workforce that we as the youth will be a part of raises ethical implications, especially the question, what are we unwilling to lose with the increasing takeover of artificial intelligence? It should not replace humanity. We must keep that aspect of a doctor caring for a patient or an engineer designing for their community. This is an idea that I, as a leader of an origami nonprofit chapter, has experienced. We're using a simple piece of paper and folding it with that genuinity, knowing that you're going to care for a person. We can use AI in order to make something faster, in order to add to our workforce. But we must also preserve the fact that the value of a person devoting their time out of the day to buy the paper, fold origami, sending it out from the good of their heart, That is what AI cannot replace, and that is something that we should have in that balance. My name is Leni Valeon and I am from Brazil representing the International Association for Youth and Students for Peace. The distress many young Brazilians feel towards AI is rational. In our recent elections, our superior electoral court had to ban deep fakes outright after clone voices and fabricated videos spread online. Young people have also seen bias in automated public service in a digital economy that too often extracts from our communities rather than including them. But skepticism is not rejection. In Brazil, IWAYSP runs character and leadership education programs where young people are mentored to build real solutions to social problems and community projects like Favelinda, which brings art and dignity to overlooked neighborhoods. This work and many other works they do shows me that the same young people who distrust AI can become its most responsible stewards if they are resourced and included. So we ask for two things. First, transparency and accountability. Citizens have the right to understand how AI systems affect their lives to seek redress and harm, of course, and including the review environment costs of data centers. Second, that AI serves peace and cooperation, advanced dialogue and conflict prevention, rather than deepening inequality. Technology should guide it. Moderator · Ali Mustafa [2:59:12]: Thank you. AI is powerful, but we should ask two important questions to ourselves. Who is being protected by AI and who might be left behind? AI is already changing the job market. In United States, tens of thousands of announced job cuts have been linked to AI. Around the world, the International Labor Organization say about one in four workers are in job debt are exposed to generative AI. But the biggest issue is not only how many jobs AI will replace, the bigger question is are people prepared for the job that will come next? Some workers will have access to AI education and training, while many communities may be left behind. That is why AI policy must include the young people. Moderator · Ali Mustafa [3:00:20]: Government should invest in affordable AI education, reskilling and upskilling and support for the people who job are changing. AI should not become a reason for a greater inequality. It should become a tool that give people new opportunity. Many community can face a greater risk from AI. For example, a large language model train on a specific and specific region may not represent a specific culture of a specific region. We need a policy that make AI fair, safe, and transparent for everybody. People should-- Thank you so much. Governments and international partners should invest in electricity, connectivity, and digital devices in underserved communities and work to make AI tools and education affordable, and particular attention to the global south. Everyone affected by artificial intelligence deserves the knowledge to use it safely, including children, students, workers. and older generations who face rising risks from fraud, impersonation, and manipulation. AI literacy should be built into public education and at every level and explained in plain, accessible language for all ages. Do we agree on that? Thank you. Article four, privacy and data protection. Every person has the right to control their own data. government should enact strong protections against the unauthorized collection, sale, or use of personal data, including biometric and health data, and begin preparing now for the risk that data encrypted today may be exposed by more powerful technologies in the future, such as quantum computing. Do we agree on that? Thank you. Article five, transparency and accountability. People have the right when a decision affecting them has been shaped by artificial intelligence and how that decision was reached. Governments and companies should disclose the purpose for which their AI systems are deployed and developers and operators should be held accountable when those systems cause harm. Do we agree on that? Article six, fairness and non-discrimination. Artificial intelligence should help to close the gap between communities, not widen it. Systems used in healthcare, education, employment, and financial services should undergo regular bias audits, with clear channels of redress for any harmed by a discriminatory outcome. Do we agree on that? Article seven, human oversight of critical systems. Some decisions belong to people, not machines. Artificial intelligence used in critical infrastructure, including water, energy, and health systems, should operate under the oversight of qualified human who retains the authority to inspect, override, and disengage the system at any time. Do we agree on that? Article eight, Economic transition and workers' rights. The pace of artificial intelligence adoption should not outpace the ability of workers to adapt. Governments should require labor impact assessment before high-impact AI systems are deployed and provide funding to support workforce transition. Young people should be supported to become creators of AI solutions as well as users of them. Do we agree on that? Article nine, environmental responsibility. The environmental cost of artificial intelligence is part of its governance. Companies operating artificial intelligence infrastructure should disclose their energy and water use, invest in more efficient systems, and take responsibility for the impact of data centers on the communities around them. Do we agree on that? Article 10, culture and linguistic inclusion. Artificial intelligence should reflect the full diversity of the people it serves. Governments and technology companies should invest in artificial intelligence systems that support underrepresented languages and reflect local culture so that no community is left unheard because its language was absent from the data. Do we agree on that? Lastly, Article 11, safety and well-being of children and young people. Children and young people need protection built into design of artificial intelligence platforms should be required to guard against AI enabled exploitation, manipulation and risk to mental health as a condition of their operation, not as a response after harm has occurred. Do we agree on that? Thank you. With that, this assembly, this assembly of young people today, independently on our own, we adopt this resolution. Congratulations. With that, I can absolutely give you the word that this declaration is definitely moving forward with the support of the system that we have today, including major group of children and youth. Permanent Mission of Bahamas, Permanent Mission of Dominica, and other bodies that have joined today in their capacity. And we will start working on it and we will do every effort to put it into the General Assembly and see how we can further it. Once again, congratulations everyone.
