The General Assembly must regularly examine itself, including its role and working methods, to ensure it is fit-for-purpose and capable of responding effectively, thoughtfully, and meaningfully to the most urgent global challenges. The General Assembly remains the chief deliberative, policy-making and representative organ of the United Nations, as well as the world's premier multilateral forum. As the President of the General Assembly has observed, a stronger United Nations requires a stronger General Assembly.

Good afternoon, Dear colleagues, I call to order this meeting of the Working Group on the strengthening and revitalizing of the work of the General Assembly. This is the first formal meeting of this group under this new title, as agreed in the resolution adopted at the end of last session of the General Assembly. As you are aware, the President of the General assembly appointed Ambassador Williams and myself as co chairs of this Working Group and we'd like again to thank the President of the General assembly for the confidence looking forward to continue working with Member States and turning every stone to make this work important. Now we before the meeting you have received a note describing the expectations and the parameters of this conversation today. And the focus for this session would be on implementing Resolution 793 to 7, which is the resolution that I was referring to.
Our task is to convene as a Working group during this 80th session to review the implementation of the resolution and therefore our focus during this session will be to ensure together that the commitments we agreed upon consensually it's a consensual resolution, are carried out and implemented accordingly. As we have noted in our letter of 23rd of January this year, we dedicate this first session, this first meeting of the Group, to an interactive exchange between Member States on the implementation of provisions pertaining to the first two pillars of the work of this group, the role and authority of the General assembly and the working methods. And there is ample reference to a number of novelties in that Resolution 79, 327 in.
