Distinguished delegates, it's— this is 5 PM. It has been the practice of this committee to take advantage of the presence of NGO representatives to engage in an interactive dialogue with them between 5 and 6 PM each afternoon. In accordance with this practice, I now invite NGOs present in the room to participate in a question and answer session with the Committee in accordance with the list that was circulated to the delegations. The NGO representatives will be invited to speak from the podium. I would like to remind delegates that based on the past practice, there is a time limit of 10 minutes per NGO. I repeat, 10 minutes per NGO, including the presentation and question and answers. If there is no objection, I would now like to call on the representative My apologies. I would now like to call on the representative of Center for Environmental and Social Development, INC. To come to the podium and take the floor. I welcome— I welcome the distinguished representative of Center for Environmental and Social Development. And would like to give him the floor. The floor is yours and you have 10 minutes. Thank you. Mr. [1:53:59]: Chair, would like to thank you all and would like to thank the representative of Turkey for his very special question, especially that most of the Information is online. However, turning to the advocacy effort in the Middle East on economic, social, and cultural rights, our center worked on a number of important practical matters. I would like to give some examples. Turning to refugees' rights and education, the organization supported small initiatives for Syrian refugees, including the education of the youth and children affected by conflict. We believe that the right to education, especially for children and refugees, is part and parcel of the social, economic, and cultural rights. One of the latest programs was a grant worth $550 to Yesar in Hatay to provide Syrian youth with the necessary school equipment. And our online website, Lebanon allowed us to support Mohammed Jindi, who is a student who was awarded from the EU for refugee creativities. Turning to socioeconomic inclusion, our center in 2018 supported members of the Syrian refugees under the umbrella of the Syrian Dares Club, who have presented their stories before Americans here in New York, New Jersey, and other states. They have also tried to present some of the cultural aspects, including food, culture, and other matters to present their cultural identity and convey their experience to a wider community. Turning to education and cultural rights of refugees, in 2019, the center launched Music for Refugees initiative, which focused on a Syrian refugee in Turkey called Samah Hajazi. She assisted dozens of children to learn music for For us, this is a clear example that education and, and culture is not a luxury. However, we have to support them psychologically and uphold their right for creativity and education. During COVID-19, we launched awareness campaigns for a number of refugee children with the presence of specialized doctors in the United States via Zoom. They are also present on our online website. In Arabic. We could not provide full English translation. However, they are present. Turning to social protection and the protection of children's rights, in 2020 we provided some material on sexual violence that a child in Lebanon have been subjected to, and we tried to ensure the prosecution of the perpetrators to ensure social protection. This is one of the approaches adopted by the Center to uphold socioeconomic and cultural rights in terms of vulnerabilities and displacement, to respond to crises and ensure the right to housing and decent life. In February 2023, the center launched some material on the Syrian and Turkish earthquakes. We clarified the volume of damage materially and in kind. And we cooperated with some NGOs where we called for help to Turkish and Syrian people and to provide the support to everyone. All of it is present in our online website. You can easily access them. Turning to the right to education and decent work and social justice, the center has launched a number of articles and media material to address food security, meet inflation, the provision of potable water, agriculture, to uphold socioeconomic rights that are relevant to the daily life of people so that they can have a decent living. And turning to agriculture and rural life, today we have sent to the— our colleague, the Turkish ambassador, or the Turkish delegate, a letter to be conveyed to the Turkish mission. The main aim of the letter is to address the problem of flooding, especially in Deir ez-Zor in Syria. The objective was to convey the impact of such flooding on the agricultural land farmers and others. This is a clear example that our advocacy is not based on a confrontation with governments. Instead, we try to convey the life on the ground and to uphold the socioeconomic rights of people through drawing a real picture. Turning to cultural rights and protecting civil and the artistic landscape, we supported so many initiatives, the last of which was the Bustan Project. We've also addressed this project during the previous session. We provided $2,500 to draw the main architect— architectural lines of this theater with cooperation of Barca Art Center in Germany. This is an example of our belief that culture and art is part and parcel of upholding communities after war because it opens a space for dialogue. Supports pluralism, it counters extremism and hate speech. You can also have access to this project online as we have published it last week. The organization participated and interacted with a number of civil research and rights networks who uphold socioeconomic and cultural rights, including the net— regional international networks and organizations, Mithla such as Social Works and Habitat International. This interaction facilitated our approach to link between human rights, sustainable development, public accountability, and the freedom of expression. Thus, our advocacy effort in the Middle East includes training, building capacity, supporting journalists, and journalistic people, the right of journalists, rights of children, uh, countering crises, food security, water, agriculture, in addition to the problems of inflation and economic crisis. Um, and this is part of the greater landscape of socioeconomic and cultural sphere that you've asked about. There is no doubt that our resources are limited. However, our work is based on years of experience and efficiency based on our transparency. We are trying to convey the needs of affected communities, reflecting them in the form of practical recommendations and cooperation with other organizations to uphold the rights of people and protect them. Thank you. Committee on NGOs · Chair [2:01:43]: I would like to thank the representative of the NGO and invite the committee to ask any questions if there are any. Türkiye [2:02:09]: Firstly, I would like to thank the NGO representative for participating in this Q&A session and also his answers in lots of thematic issues, what they're doing on the ground. But my question will be more of a how question than a what question. Considering the fact that this organization is based in the United States, but its main focus is in MENA region, My question is, how do you carry out your aims being physically far from the region? So how do you— which partners you are cooperating with? So if you can answer that, I would be very appreciated. Committee on NGOs · Chair [2:02:54]: Shukran. And you see my face right now. This is my face after I have been tortured, and I'm a totally new person today. That's, um, the first point. All our— the workers, including me, are some of the most famous journalists who have worked in the Middle East. The Turkish media also has conducted interviews with us because you know how connected we are in the Syrian society. We work in so many research centers and publish a lot. Moreover, the first network that covered the incidents in Syria in 2011 was founded by me. It covered, uh, all four corners of Syria. We have relied on journalists, citizens from Syria, and we focus on the Syrian cause more than others. I'm not talking about myself as an individual, but I'm talking about the entire board, all the members who are highly involved on the Syrian dossier. And it will be quite easy if you can just search for any of our names, you would recognize our history and our activities. One of our members of the board had his son killed just because he was from the opposition to the Syrian regime. Thank you. Committee on NGOs · Chair [2:04:50]: Thank you very much.
