In doing so, the Conference will also take into account the evolving international security environment and recent developments affecting the Treaty and the broader nuclear non-proliferation regime.\nThe NPT entered into force in 1970 and was extended indefinitely in 1995. The Treaty is regarded as the cornerstone of the global nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation regime. It was designed to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons, to further nuclear disarmament and to promote cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.\nConferences to review the operation of the Treaty have been held at five-year intervals since the Treaty went into effect in 1970.
