UNON, in collaboration with the Embassy of Kazakhstan in Kenya, marks the International Day against Nuclear Tests with senior UN officials, diplomats and survivors reflecting on the humanitarian, health and environmental consequences of nuclear weapons use and testing.
The United Nations Office at Nairobi, in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Kenya, commemorates the International Day against Nuclear Tests under the theme "Humanitarian and Ecological Consequences of Nuclear Weapons Use and Testing." The event marks the 35th anniversary of the closure of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site, the 81st anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the 20th anniversary of the Treaty on a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in Central Asia. The programme brings together senior United Nations officials, representatives of Kazakhstan, Japan and the Government of Kenya, as well as testimonies on the human health and environmental impacts of the atomic bombings. It will also feature a documentary on the closure of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site and a cultural segment.
