Open debate in connection with "Strengthening the mechanisms for the peaceful settlement of disputes: follow-up to Security Council resolution 2788 (2025)" under the agenda item "Maintenance of international peace and security" [S/2026/553].
The open debate will seek to: (a) Review the implementation of resolution 2788 (2025) and identify best practices for strengthening mechanisms for the peaceful settlement of disputes; (b) Explore the diverse ways in which Member States are advancing the pacific settlement of disputes and how they use diplomacy and dialogue to help enhance mutual trust, avoid direct confrontations, ease tensions and resolve conflicts; (c) Identify potential gaps in the use of existing Charter-based mechanisms for the pacific settlement of disputes, particularly those included in Articles 33 and 34; (d) Consider how the Secretary-General, the Secretariat and regional and subregional organizations can better support peaceful settlement through good offices, impartial convening and mediation support; (e) Generate practical recommendations to strengthen the Council's preventive role, build common ground and support peaceful pathways in situations that may endanger international peace and security.
